Why is my Central A/C Shutting Off with a Backfiring Noise?
Our Rheem Criterion II CAC is shutting off with a very loud noise (like a backfire) whenever the thermostat temperature is reached. It does that when cooling or heating.
It uses a 16x20x1 filter but I cant see where we can slide it so it fits properly. We change filters every 2-3 months and tape it to the duct opening.
The A/C is probably 10 years old. I am not sure if any maintanance has been performend in the past 3 years. We are novices but can follow directions 
Any help would be appreciated.
First off the heater is not 10 years old, they didn’t make that one until about 5 years ago and even then a two-stage gas heater was very expensive. And trust me I own an A/C company and people who do maintenance programs are scam artists, there is no such thing as a “tune up” what is there to “tune”, nothing. Theoretically your refrigerant lasts forever, so those guys out there that say they are topping your refrigerant levels off are trash. If you keep your filter clean, once a month and clean your outdoor condenser coil at the begging of summer you will be fine. Now under the blower there should be a wire that attaches to the two holes in the back and folds under the angled piece of metal in the front. If that piece is not in there your filter wont fit, you should go to a Rheem or Ruud dealer and ask them for it, I know I throw away 15 of those a week at least. Try this, put the t-stat on off and the fan on, once it turns on turn it back to auto and see if it does it. Also you need to know if anybody has worked on the heater and maybe installed a relay that could be clanging; I have seen people that don’t know how to work on two-stage heaters wire both stages together with a relay. You can also set the thermostat to come on take the door off and press the door switch manually to see what’s going on. I hope you know that you have a very good heater in your house, if it is installed correctly. Good Luck.
