An Easy Way To Grow Basil At Home

Basil has been used since ancient times to enhance food with its aromatic tones. It derives its name from a Greek word that relates to royalty. This is because the herb was highly valued and was an important ingredient in many dishes. During the middle ages, judges and important people used to grow basil and carry the chopped up leaves wherever they went, in an attempt to freshen the air and also as a cure for disease.

The adult plant is around nine inches high, and sports dark green leaves that have certain sheen to them. In midsummer, small white blossoms cover the plant and attract many bees. This hardy herb first made an appearance in the Pacific islands. It soon moved over to Asia and Europe, after which it spread quickly through the entire world.

It was in the Mediterranean that this herb was especially prized, with it quickly becoming a staple item in many dishes. It was also in traditional medicine and healing. The fresh variety of basil always adds something very special to a dish, which means it is better to Grow Basil from scratch. When dried, it loses a lot of that unique pungency. If you wish to try your hand at growing this herb basil, it is quite easy.

Add some good quality compost to the trays, which you can find at a nursery. If you prefer to Grow Your Own Herb, the following mix is excellent. Mix together five parts topsoil, two parts grit, two parts sharp sand and three parts peat moss. This mix will allow for excellent water filtration and air ventilation, which will greatly benefit the young plants. Place the seeds on the soil and gently push them into the mix, using a pencil to make sure that they are covered. Sieve some compost over them and give them a light watering.

Place the tray in a warm place where there is adequate light. When Growing Herbs At Home, they should not be exposed to harsh sunlight, so keep an eye out for that. Cover them with a thin sheet of plastic or glass. This cover will help the soil retain water while the seeds are busy growing. Check regularly to ensure that they have not dried out. When they feel dry, simply water with a fine spray.

At the beginning of growth, you will notice that their initial leaves are different to those that are grown afterwards. When the seedling has a few sets of leaves and looks strong, it is time to plant it in a bigger container. You may choose a window box, or some other vessel to grow the basil. They are very adaptable plants and anyone can grow basil outdoors.

Firm the soil down and put the vessel in a sunny spot. Watch as it grows into a healthy basil plant, at which time you can snip off those aromatic leaves and add them to your food for an instant flavor burst!
