How Heavy Metal Is Evolving In Today’s World
Heavy metal fans Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn wanted to show how the globalization of heavy metal has impacted the music scene in countries that haven’t always welcomed heavy metal music, including those who live outside of the US.
In “Global Metal”, the film created by the team, viewers follow Dunn on a personal exploration of how heavy metal music has impacted different cultures outside of Europe and North America.
The film shows how the West’s most talked –about and much criticized musical genre has spread throughout the world and how individuals are taking the basics of the genre and turning it into an art form all their own.
Through their travels and research, McFadyen and Dunn explored the full effect of heavy metal on several different countries to get a full picture of what the genre is like outside of the US.
Although considered non-traditional in many non-Westernized cultures, heavy metal music has spread over the globe, gaining fans in countries that didn’t always celebrate heavy metal music or even really know what the genre was outside of strongly Westernized cover bands and what they saw on television.
As shown in Global Metal, from trash metal in Iran to black metal in China, heavy metal has proven to be a unique musical genre that can be transformed into something that speaks not only to the local culture, but also to the state of the country and the musical landscape that encompasses it.
Through their travels and research, McFadyen and Dunn explored the full effect of heavy metal on countries that have their own share of political strife and corruption, illustrating the difficulty that some of the musicians featured have faced in making their music public in a world that has hasn’t always agreed with the perceived negative messages of heavy metal music.
The film shows the impact of globalization on the musical genre, along with exploring the extreme’s of heavy metal – from Iranian thrash metal to Indonesian death metal.
