Pantera’s Role in Heavy Metal History
Vinnie Paul and Darrel Abbot are the two Texan brothers who are the brainchild of the great band known as Pantera. Pantera was a heavy metal band that has rocked the world during the 80s. Vinnie was the band’s drummer and Darrell was the main guitarist. While there were a few personalities who have made short careers with the band, it was these two that stayed with the band from its creation in 1981 until the recent years.
Pantera has gone through a number of line-up through the course of their popularity as glam rockers (1981 to 1986). When the band was first introduced, the line-up included the bassist Tommy Bradford, rhythm guitarist Terry Glaze and Donny Hart as the lead singer; Matt L’Amour had spent a short time doing the lead vocals. In 1982, the band was joined by the bassist Rex Brown. 1987 marked Phil Anselmo’s term as the band’s frontman and vocalist. In addition, it is the 1987 Pantera crew that successfully won the fans, making the band a huge success in the next 16 years.
Wild hairstyles, spandex and goth makeup; the initial stylistics of the Pantera crew were observed to have similarities with the more popular bands such as Van Halen and Kiss. They experienced difficulties in establishing their own image as a band. Through the years, they will manage to create a concept called Groove Metal, which is described as a sub-genre of thrash. With the release of their single “Cowboys from Hell” in 1990, the band has bagged the recognition of being one of the highest rated heavy metal groups of the 90s. That single marked the start of the band’s rise to the peak of their career as well as popularity.
Similar to other successful bands, Pantera has dealt with all sorts of problems concerning its crews such as drug overdose and absence in concerts. Anselmo and Darrel were both infamous for their substance abuse history during the 90s, which later on accounted to Anselmo’s meltdown. His heroin addiction has hurt his personal reputation, his substance abuse problems interfered with the band’s rehearsals and performances. Substance abuse only caused the quarrels between the crew members to escalate.
Still, the sound of the band managed to win a huge fan base, particularly at the southern states which include Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma. They have left their stamp in the heavy metal history with their hits. Their names were imprinted in the hearts of their fans with their successful albums; Metal Magic in 1983, Project Jungle in 1984, I am Night in 1985, Power Metal in 1988, Cowboys from Hell in 1990, Vulgar Display of Power in 1992, The Great Southern Trendkill in 1996 and Reinventing the Steel in 2000. For a white thrash metal band, Pantera managed to earn rave reviews mostly from the fans.
Pantera has not reached stardom until the early 90s, after their 10-year run. In 2001, the crew finally decided to take a break. Due to the continuing problems with the band crews, Pantera has run its course and marked 2003 as its official end. The war of words between Anselmo and Vinnie became inevitable. In 2004, Darrel Abbott was shot and killed by a fan in Columbus, Ohio while performing with his new band, the Damageplan. Even though the band has split up, Pantera merchandise is as popular as ever.
Although their initial years earned little attention from music critics, they managed to earn successes with their widely popularized singles. With that, they were applauded as one of the greatest groups in heavy metal history. MTV has included Pantera on their list of top 5 All Heavy Metal Bands of all times. VH1 acknowledges their mark in heavy metal history by awarding them the Number 45 slot on their list of top 100 Hard Rock artists. Nowadays, die-hard fans have enjoyed the appreciated value of their Pantera merch, being one of the most sought-after collector’s items
