Lady Royal

Be A Lady Pirate On The High Seas

You’d be forgiven to think that men were only pirates, but you’d be wrong. There have been some famous lady pirates throughout history on the high seas. If you fancy brandishing a cutlass and swaggering around on your own pirate ship this Halloween, then why not wear a ravishing lady pirate costume.

When thinking about famous pirates who comes to mind? You might think about some of the fictional pirates such as Long John Silver, Captain Hook and Captain Jack Sparrow. But what about real pirates? A few examples are Captain Kidd, Calico Jack and Blackbeard. All very well, but what about female pirates?

First of all, there were female pirates but they were very few in number. You may be wondering why this was the case. It was mainly because women were forbidden to sail on pirate ships, probably because they would cause a riot with the men. Life on the high seas in those days was extremely harsh and most women wouldn’t relish such a life.

There are, however, two famous lady pirates that we can mention: Anne Bonny and Mary Read. Anne Bonny was born in Cork, Ireland. Her father was a lawyer and her mother was his servant. She was born in 1697 and her name was Anne Cormac. When the affair was found out he left with Anne and the servant and fled to South Carolina. He became a wealthy plantation owner. However, Anne was very adventurous and had a fiery temper. She married James Bonny, a pirate. Later she encountered Calico Jack (Jack Rackham) and fell in love with him. She started a new life as a pirate with Calico Jack after leaving her husband. Her pirate adventures were mainly in the Caribbean. She dressed as a man whilst aboard the pirate ship and people said she was as good as any man at stealing and fighting. During her pirate adventures she met another female sailor called Mary Read who was an English woman

Mary was also the result of an affair. As a child her mother dressed her as a boy in order to get money from her family. Most of her life had been spent dressed as a boy, in fact. She was a footboy to a wealthy family and later went onto a warship. For a while she married and took on a female role. Howevr, when her husband passed away, she returned to sea. Her ship was seized by Calico Jack. This is when she became friends with Anne Bonny.

Perhaps you feel adventurous like Anne and Mary and would fancy a lady pirate outfit for Halloween or for your next fancy dress event. You probably don’t want to dress as a man but fortunately there are some very attractive and sexy female costumes. My personal favorite is the Royal Lady Pirate Costume. I love the waistcoat and short skirt with the matching pirate hat. You would only need to add some long black boots and perhaps a cutlass and you’ll be ready for any adventure.
