Hunter Century
Whale Wars and the documentary The Cove?

These two works are heavily against the hunting of whales and dolphins. There is one aspect that bugs me about it though. Aren’t the hunters hunting the whales and dolphins, doing it for food and profit. Do these people really care about wildlife that much, that they would let humans loose food and money over animals that provide for them? Hasn’t the hunting of these animals been in the culture of Japan ans other countries for centuries? Am I missing something here? If I am, please do tell.

There are many people who put the welfare of animals above the welfare of other people. One example are the crews of the Sea Shepherd boats: the cuisine is 100% vegan (which is why I have yet to volunteer). However, another issue is that it is not sustainable, at least in the eyes of many. Personally, I believe that every creature has every right to be on this earth as much as we do. However, it is also a fact of life that some animals kill others for various reasons, but never has one animal hunted another into extinction before humans – at least not to my knowledge. So, myself and many people I have discussed this with, are all for sustainable use of natural resources, and many professionals believe that hunting whales in any sense or number will lead to extinction.

Also, the fact that it has been part of the culture is a null point with people. Sweat shops and political corruption used to be the foundation of the US culture during the Industrial Revolution. Japan also used to have the violent reign of the Shogunate and samurai. That doesn’t necessarily mean that it should be a practice to be continued in to the future.

Also, at least with the Japanese Whalers, they are hunting the whales for scientific research and selling the remains. I have no idea what research they are actually doing, since 99% of all media in this country slanders it as a lie, but that is their claim and I have seen no proof to the contrary.
