How Handheld App Creation Can Be Difficult
No matter what the experts say, handheld application development is harder than you’d expect. There are many explanations for this:
- Too many platforms to support: The first decision to make is which handheld devices to support. Is it better to stick with higher-end smartphones or should you target a broader set of devices? The choice of platform has a huge influence what your application can or cannot do.
- Radically different application models: Limiting yourself to a single platform isn’t enough, often you’ll still have to choose between different app models. A BlackBerry developer has to decide between developing a full-fledged BlackBerry application or a more generic Java ME app.
- Steep learning curves: Developing a mobile application often requires learning a new programming language (like Objective C) and/or a new set of programming tools (like proprietary tools). Since the market is so diverse, programmers usually have a difficult time locating useful development help.
- Conflicting data persistence choices: Unless you’re creating an browser-based app, you’ll want to persist data locally, and there are so many options for doing this. Complex data requirements may be best served by a proper embedded database. Simpler applications may get away with simple data persistence options, but data exchange with external data sources can be quite harder in those situations.
- Consumer versus enterprise focus: Although Apple has shown that there is a lot of money to be made serving the consumer market, there is still a lot of demand for business-focused applications. The two markets are vastly different, however, and you simply cannot target both of them with the same application.
- Real startup expenses: Mobile app creation is not inexpensive. Experienced programmers are in demand and charge accordingly, and there are non-trivial expenses in terms of hardware and network charges.
So why bother creating handheld applications? The rewards outweigh the costs. The return on investment of a mobile enterprise app can be tremendous, especially for apps aimed at field personnel. The demand for mobile consumer applications means there’s a lot of money for companies able to satisfy that demand.
Mobile app development is a lot easier if you do your homework. If you want to write a good business application you’ll need to invest in great mobile enterprise tools. For consumers, you’ll still need great development tools, but you’ll also need a lot of flash and a simple user interface.
Succeeding at handheld application development requires a lot of thought and planning.
