A crackling fire, for one! A fire pit in your backyard unites loved-ones like NOTHING ELSE CAN! The dazzling gleam and the penetrating and warming power of an open fire give off an ambiance that CANNOT be matched. Melting hot marshmallow over chocolate and graham cracker is nice, too! There are some facts you should know about fire pits before you acquire one.
You can either build your own or you can buy one at a store. If buying one at a store, the set up should be easy, as all ready-to-use pits come with instructions. You can acquire DIY information online for constructing your very own fireplace from the ground up. Such guide books can also be obtained from stores that sell outdoor firepits, and even from neighborhood library. You basically will need to dig a hole that is as large as you want the fire to be and at least a foot deep. Next, gravel, rocks, brick, or concrete (blocks or poured slab) can be is used to fill the hole about half. Then, put in place a metal lining (a cutout 55 gallon barrel works well, or you can get an adequate metal strip from most hardware stores). Next, you’ll want to pile rocks, brick, or concrete blocks around the metal liner, securing each with masonry glue. Finish construction with a metal cover or capstone. After it has cured for a few days, your fireplace is ready to burn your choice of coal or dry firewood!
Safety precautions should always be used when operating anything involving an open flame. Keep anything flammable away from the flames and don’t let children use the fire pit without adult supervision. The kids will enjoy spending evenings around the fire, toasting marshmallows and scaring each other with ghost stories. Make sure that they are well educated on fire safety.
