Rheem Gas Furnace Problem?
I have a Rheem Corsaire gas furnace that is giving me problems. It continues to cut off and leave me in the cold. Indicator light blinks twice leading me to believe it is a pressure switch issue. I have checked the tubing and it is clear. When I button everything back up and turn the unit back on, the heating element glows orange and just before the gas starts to flow I get a weird “sucking” vaccumn type sound 2 or 3 times and it trips the swtich again. If I leave the top access door off where the PS and burners are located – everything works just fine.
I have noticed in times past that excessive winds will trip the PS but in this case the winds are not a problem. Any suggestions?
i assume you have an 80% eff furnace that vents to metal pipe and or chimney??is this the type with a solid top cover door,therefore needs air for combustion piped in thru a 2 or 3 inch diameter hole in the side or top????how new is it???…if you are using basement air then make sure the hole and fitting are clear and large enough….if fresh air is piped from outside,make sure inlet [ outside ] and pipe are clear… also make sure the exhaust vent/pipe is clear…a partial obstruction of it can still allow the pressure switch to close but just barely,,,then when the gas valve opens the brner gas adds just enough pressure [ reduces vacuum ] to re-open the switch….leaving top door off masks the problem for now but if its desined to have the door on and its installed properly,,you shouldnt have to leave it off..also its slightly more efficient to use outside air for combustion because if you use inside air then you are venting out air that you have paid to heat……if your furnace is a 90%+ that vents with plastic pipe,,much of the same advice applies,,be sure the exhaust pipe is clear and terminated properly per install instructions..i.e. no excessive use of elbows, no elbows facing down anywhere,including outside,,etc…hope this helps…..dan
