Why Choose a Portable Air Conditioner?
When it comes to portable air conditioning, not too many people believe that it’s the best way to lower the temperature. It simply doesn’t compare to either central air or an air conditioning unit that fits in the window. But sometimes your circumstances might not permit either of the two more efficient choices.
For instance, those who live in an apartment might find that this type of equipment is the only way they can get any relief from high temperatures. Oftentimes, there isn’t a window that’s suitably located, or perhaps your lease agreement forbids the installation of a window unit. In this case, a portable air conditioner is your only real choice to cool down the air.
You may also need to occasionally cool down a certain location. It can be impractical to install a permanent fixture in some locations like a workshop or garage. In these circumstances portable air conditioning can be a viable option. Without going to the trouble of permanent installation, you can get a reasonably decent level of comfort.
Portable air conditioning units function in a similar manner to other types of residential air conditioning systems. They draw in air, cool and dehumidify it, then force it back out. Unlike other systems, they don’t pull in air from outside. Portable air conditioners use only air that is already in the room.
This is one of the reasons they are inherently less efficient. Indeed, most people who complain about portable air conditioners do so because the room simply doesn’t get as cool as with other types of air conditioning.
Because of this, you’re not likely to get the cool temperatures from a portable model that you might be expecting. On the other hand, portable units can take the edge off a hot room, providing some level of comfort in situations where more standard solutions aren’t workable.
It’s also important to make sure the unit has enough cooling power for the room where it is being used. For a room that’s 150 square feet or less, you should be fine with a 7500 BTU model. A 9000 BTU model is more suitable for a room of 200 square feet. In other words, you should plan on adding 1000 to 1500 BTUs of capacity for every 50 square feet you are trying to cool.
You’ll need to anticipate emptying the condensed moisture that results from the cooling process. With central or a window unit, on the other hand, moisture is disposed of outdoors. Some of these units feature a removable tray. In some cases, the whole unit has to be upended in order to empty the water. Others have an exhaust hose that can be passed out a window to drain the water outside. Usually these units feature a foam insulation kit to seal the window more effectively.
