if my central a/c condensing unit is running and no breakers are thrown, why isn’t my fan running?
the inside fan is not running even when the fan mode is on.
when you say condensing unit, do you mean your outside fan isnt coming on? this is very important. OR do you mean your inside fan isnt working? this is very important as i need to know which fan, (inside or outside), isnt coming on.
is the compressor coming on? if the compressor and outdoor fan arent coming on, it’s probably a bad capacitor or a bad contactor relay. hope for a shot outside cap as they are cheaper. easy DIY fix too!
if the indoor fan isnt coming on and everything else is working, that’s different. if it’s the indoor fan, put the unit in “fan” mode and see if the indoor fan comes on. that will tell us a lot more.
either way, there are many things it could be. any thing from a shot fan motor, (in or out), to a bad cap or relay.

i can tell you this much. if you know what a capacitor is, look at it for a bulging top in the silver can. IF you see an obvious bulge, your cap is shot. talk to me before changing. they can shock you, even with the power off.
alright then! if this a semi new unit, it could be a circuit board. let’s hope not. the indoor fan has a capacitor. see if you can pull the cover for the INDOOR electrical components off and look for a silver can looking thing. go ahead and cut the power off. inspect the cap for a bulge at the top. IF you see a bulge, we solved it! DON’T TOUCH CAP! HE’LL SHOCK YOU!
if the cap looks good and you don’t have an ohm or microfarade meter, let’s move on….
next thing is an indoor fan relay. i can’t help here. you would have to find the relay and check it with a volt meter.
let’s go to the fan itself. did you notice a noise before the unit failed? kind of a “squeeling” noise? IF you can reach the fan blades, put it in fan mode and spin the blades. see if the fan runs. (after we have checked out the capacitor) IF the fan starts, see if it makes a loud noise or if the butt end of the fan is hot to the touch, (shot fan motor). worst case.
after we get this crap fixed, regardless, replace your indoor filter!

here’s another thing. put the unit in cool mode and go see what the outside unit is doing. the outdoor fan and compressor should start.
IF your unit is totally dead, inside and out, fan mode, heat mode, everything, you probably have a bad transformer. easy, cheap, fix. transformers seldom fail though.
