What is a Portable Air Conditioner?

The joy of coming inside and enjoying some cool air on a hot day is wonderful. But in some situations installing a central air unit or a window air conditioner is just not an option. This is where a portable air conditioner can come into play. These units are nice as they can be used in a variety of places and situations. They do not require the installation of a window unit. All that is required is that you are able to vent the machine to the outside. This is normally accomplished using a hose that runs from the unit to a window or door to get the job done

The brilliant aspect of these portable air conditioning units is that they give you control over your space whether it is at an office or your own home. Due to the size of these units and the fact that they are built for portability it is easy to move these units from room to room. This makes them very efficient because you only need to spend money to cool the room you are in. Also some units come with heaters and dehumidifying options as well, making them very versatile.

These portable air conditioners have really advanced in technology and are very convenient and easy to use. Many of these units now come with electronic timers that allow you to program your air conditioning unit so it comes on in time to have your room cooled off before you arrive. This eliminates the first few minutes of sweltering heat while you wait for the unit to bring the air temperature down to your comfort zone. This makes having one of these units very sensible and effective for cooling down different places during the hot summer months. The capacity of an appliance to provide air conditioning is measured in BTUs (British Thermal Units). The greater the number of BTUs the more powerful the cooling effect. For example, a 10,000 BTU air conditioner will be sufficient to cool a shady room of up to 28 square metres, or a sunny room of up to 17 square metres.

Most portable air conditions will be in the range of 25 to 35 inches tall. The typical weight for these systems is between 60 and 80 pounds. They come with wheels so moving them around a house or apartment is not a major deal but packing it up stairs or from location to location might require some help. But the flexibility that they offer you is a huge help in keeping your energy costs down or cooling a space that you might not otherwise be able to cool. You might also consider that some of the units come with heating units as well which makes them even more worth the investment as you can use the same unit year round.

Before you run out and buy one remember you need to calculate the size of the rooms you want to cool and be sure and get a unit that produces sufficient BTUs to accomplish the job. Also note that some units offer adjustable setting like low, medium and high to help save energy in smaller rooms but get the job done on larger ones.

Portable air conditionars are made by a number of  manufacturers like Delonghi, Fedders, Toyotomi, and Danby. Portable air conditioners offer a very versatile cooling option for those who can’t use more conventional air conditioning methods, but they do have limitations that users need to be aware of due. Their power is limited to their size.

Where does the condensation go? Condensation (or moisture) is a byproduct of the air-conditioning process. Many portable air conditioners use that condensation to enhance the cooling cycle. Any excess vapor is discharged through the exhaust hose.
