Using Quilts To Make A Bedroom Cozy
After a long, hard day, being able to retreat into a comfortable bedroom can help you to relax. Since you will notice the look of the room first, you should consider how it is decorated. If you want a cozy, snug environment, you might want to use quilts to add just the charming touch you need.
You might want to consider purchasing a complete quilt set for your bed. Most of the sets, except for twin sizes, will have a quilt and two pillow shams. A four piece set usually has a throw pillow included, although some substitute dust ruffles. A complete bedding collection may also include sheets that match the quilt.
New quilt sets can be found to fit every bed size. It is rare, however, to locate a complete antique or heirloom set. Most of the time, you will only be able to find just the quilt and seldom will you find one larger than a full bed size. You can buy shams, such as in a solid color, that will coordinate with these quilts if you need shams.
Many impressive wall hangings are made from king quilts. You should not simply nail up quilts, however. Take a strip of material about 4 inches wide and hand stitch it to the back of the quilt near the top. Do not let the stitching go through to the front, but include the filling, or batting, material in your stitches. You can then insert a rod for hanging. Many use a decorative pole rod for this purpose.
Wall mounted quilt racks allow you to create a display that can be permanent or temporary. All you do is fold the quilt and hang it across the bar, and some feature a shelf to hold pillows. A floor stand can also be used to drape a quilt across for either decoration or temporary storage.
Quilts need special attention when it comes to cleaning. Antique quilts should be cleaned only by a professional with experience in old fabrics. Many newer ones are machine washable, but do best in a front loading machine. Quilts on display should be vacuumed periodically to prevent dust from becoming embedded. Change the position of quilts hung on a rack to prevent dust or fade lines. Keep quilts out of direct sunlight or they can fade, especially the antique ones, and consider rotating them occasionally to protect them.
For hundreds of years, people have used quilts for warmth, beauty, or both. In bygone days, women pieced the tops from scraps or old clothing, primarily to provide the family with inexpensive warmth for the bed. Over time, hundreds of patterns have been created and preserved, and fabrics run the gamut from cotton to satin and velvet. For anyone who wants a charming, cozy bedroom, quilts can be just the right finishing touch.
